1. Decide how the name should sound, not how it should look

Names live in voice chat. Before anything else, say the candidates out loud. A name that looks elegant on screen but stumbles in a callout will get shortened by your group within a week.

The readability label on each generated name is a rough proxy for this: easy means the syllable pattern is predictable at a glance.

2. Match the faction register

Elyos and Asmodian names are not just differently spelled, they sit in different registers. Bright and noble for Elyos, cold and severe for Asmodian. A name that fights its faction reads as a mistake rather than a choice.

3. Let the class set the tone

• Assassin and Ranger names can be short and sharp.
• Gladiator and Templar names should carry weight.
• Cleric and Chanter names benefit from being warm and predictable.
• Sorcerer and Spiritmaster names can afford a strange detail.

4. Keep it typeable

Every extra syllable or unusual letter is friction for the people who have to whisper you, invite you, or add you to a group. Two to three syllables with a familiar spelling pattern is the sweet spot.

If you love a long name, make sure the short version your group will inevitably use is still something you like.

5. Check it against the naming rules

Readability is not the only gate. Restricted words, impersonation, and region-specific filters can all block a name you like. Run your shortlist against the naming rules checklist before character creation so you are not deciding under time pressure.

6. Bring three names, not one

The most common way to lose ten minutes at character creation is to arrive with a single name in mind. Save three ranked options, keep the Variants panel open for your favourite, and you will be through the screen in one attempt.
